You Are What You Eat
All my life I have been a fan of being physically fit. During certain periods of my life it was easier than others. Through lots of research and reading I have worked to understand how to keep my body in good condition. Like many, I am always on the quest for more knowledge. I continue to read about new and inventive ways to workout, as well as ways to eat healthy.
The most difficult part for many of us is eating healthy. Myself, like most people, enjoy a great cheeseburger or slice of pizza. A large part of the problem is not the kind of food we eat but the brand. Many of the top brands of store food and restaurant food are made with man made ingredients.
These man made ingredients are said to lead to many health issues with Americans today. I say Americans because many other countries eat like us but they do not use fake ingredients like we do. A couple of these health issues include diabetes and cancer. Am I saying that these foods are the direct cause of diabetes and cancer? No. What I am saying is that these man made ingredients are not helpful to our bodies and have been linked to diabetes and cancer.
It is a big problem in the country when we cannot understand anything placed on the food labels. I challenge you to look at your food labels and look up a few of these “man made ingredients”. I will get you started with two that I am almost positive you have in your home. If you have anything sweet or a bag of chips you probably have these two ingredients.
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)
Sweetener made from corn. Used because it is cheaper to make and produce than sugar. This is found in pop, juices, baked goods, cookies, etc.
-Allegedly linked to obesity
-Allegedly linked to diabetes
Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) - also known as sodium glutamate, flavor enhancer 621, Ajinomoto, vetsin, or accent. This is a flavor enhancer found in lots of food. Most likely in a brand of potato chips you eat.
-Allegedly linked to obesity
-Allegedly linked to ADD, ADHD, rage disorder, hyperactivity, behavioral problems
-Allegedly linked to sleep disorders
-Allegedly linked to abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, colitis, IBS
-Allegedly linked to difficulty concentrating and poor memory
MSG is actually linked to more than this short list I have created. Some researchers have listed anywhere from 30 – 100 different health issues caused by MSG.
Meat, eggs, and milk are probably equally or more damaging than the items in our cabinets. I am not going to go into too much detail. Here is what you should know about the animal products that you eat. I love a good piece of chicken, like most of you. The problem is that the meat that we are eating was injected, caged, and fed things that would help it to produce and grow the product. Now think about this, you are drinking, eating, or scrambling meat products that have been produced unnaturally. Everything that the animal was injected with or fed, we are now consuming. Does this have an effect on our bodies or, God forbid, our children?
You can do the research yourself. We are eating the same food that we ate 20 years ago. The difference is that almost anything we eat now has been sprayed, injected, or fed unnaturally.
These epidemics are coming from somewhere. I encourage you to start reading books on organic eating. Just read and make your own decisions. I am simply passing along what I have read, researched, and observed.

I never thought about it that way, but it makes sense. I'm sure what we're eating on campus, sans FFC maybe, is smothered in all that good stuff. I guess I have some reading to do.
